FAQ’s
- Depending on the supplier most third party optical transceivers are made in the same factory as the Original equipment manufacturer so no, if you have a trusted supplier, they should be of equal quality as an OEM.
On top of this, consumers have what’s called a Multi Source Agreement.
The MSA standard enables multiple choices for end users. In simple terms, customers can choose whatever optical transceivers from any third-party vendors as they like, as long as these modules meet the MSA standards.
- MSA compliant transceivers are equipped with the same form factor as OEMS, therefore many third-party transceivers provide the same functionality as the name-brand products.
- Because of this, it enables interoperability and security. MSA compliant transceivers make it possible to use the third-party transceivers in the networking equipment such as switches and routers of other brands.
The EEPROM ID ensures this quality and compatibility and vendor lock-in
Vendor Lock-in = essence to purchase their OT. I.e Can’t put an arista into a cisco switch visa versa.
The compatibility code is known as the EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory).
This small piece of compatibility code makes all the difference when purchasing a third-party transceiver from a company like Simnet as it is this code when programmed correctly that is read, recognized, and approved by the vendor/OEM device the optic is plugged into.
Having the correct EEPROM also provides accurate DOM/DDM information which is essential in fault isolation and detecting errors.
No nag messages on console will be experienced
We aren’t copying the code directly. We create unique serialized OTs that work in oem products such as switches.
The short answer is no. While OEM’s warranties do not cover third-party optics, the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act prohibits them from revoking warranty support on their equipment due to the use of third-party optics. A great way to understand this is using a car: Let’s say you own a Mercedes. The battery then begins to fail so you purchase an unbranded yet high quality battery for your car. A year or two later you notice you need a new starter motor. Mercedes engineers notice you don’t have their branded battery. They can’t refuse to fix the starter motor because you don’t own a Mercedes battery.
- Shorter wait times
- Huge price reduction
- Guaranteed compatibility
- Life time warranty

Add warranty
Vendor can’t do custom coded dac cables
- OEM create what you call FUD – fear, uncertainty and doubt. They talk about third party optical transceivers are inferior to OEMs.
- Pass through technology
- The OEM sales personal won’t get revenue rec on the deal, hence the fud above.
