CWDM was the original multiplexing technology and was introduced as a low-cost approach to increasing bandwidth utilisation of the fibre. Using several wavelengths of light and by increasing the channel spacing between wavelengths on the fibre, CWDM allows for a simple and affordable method of carrying up to 16 channels on a single fibre. Products are available with 4, 8 or 16 channels.<\/p>
DWDM allows for the transporting of extremely large amounts of data traffic over metro or long distances. DWDM typically has the capability to transport up to 40 channels (wavelengths) by having tighter channel spacing and control. The technology is slightly more expensive than CWDM but offers significantly greater bandwidth on the single core fibre.
